Artist’s Statement

“People began building bridges a long time before they invented the wheel. Bridges have been instrumental to the progress of mankind as essential ways to communicate and travel. We in King County with so many rivers, lakes, and mountains have an abundance of bridges, many of which are exceptional in their beauty, design, location and their efficiency. Since 2015 I have been photographing a selection of bridges with a large format camera and black and white film. A few of the photographs will be on exhibit at the King County Library in Kirkland during October and November of 2016.”

About the Artist

Eduardo Calderón studied Anthropology at the University of Washington and received his BA in 1972. He has worked as a photographer in the Northwest since the late 1970s. Calderón is interested in finding open-ended moments on the street that he can isolate within the photographic frame to encourage viewers to use their imaginations when encountering the ambiguity of the images. He shoots some of his work locally but more often while traveling in Latin America and Europe.

Calderón’s work has been featured in solo shows at several Seattle galleries and included in numerous regional invitational exhibitions, most recently Seattle Collects and a parallel show to Peru: Kingdoms of the Sun and the Moon, both at the Seattle Art Museum (2015 and 2013/14 respectively) and 20 Portraits of NW Artists at the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner, Washington (2013). Calderón has received recent grants from 4Culture, the Seattle Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

All artwork displayed at the Kirkland Public Library Satellite Exhibition is for sale as marked by the Kirkland Arts Center.

Historic Bridges of King County Talk

Artist Eduardo Calderón will present a slideshow of the bridges featured in the project. Margaret Holwegner, an Engineer from King County Department of Transportation’s Bridge Unit, will also be at the presentation to answer questions regarding the history and technical details of the bridges. The Bridge Unit inspects and conducts structural analysis of county bridges and designs and manages bridge replacement, maintenance, and upgrading projects.
