Kirkland Arts Center
Request for Proposals
Kirkland Arts Center requests proposals for the interior redesign of the Peter Kirk Building. KAC will commission artists to create installations for these new spaces, and so welcomes architectural proposals with artistic solutions and use of sustainable resources. It is planned that a short documentary will be made covering the chosen projects from design to completion, with the goal of it being broadcast on public television.

PROJECT GOALS

The project should achieve the following goals: improve the entrance and work space for staff and public, offer a continuity of experience throughout the building as an arts center, provide opportunities for compelling artwork to be exhibited throughout the building, and define Kirkland Arts Center as a leader.

AREAS IDENTIFIED

Grand Staircase – to allow exhibition of contemporary art and marketing materials, and to become the major entrance from street.
Mezzanine – to direct foot traffic to various destinations in building.
Kitchen – lounge for artists and the public with wireless internet access.
Turret Room – Historically sensitive redesign into a multi-use space as an office, public meeting room, and art book library.
Storage – Third floor requires storage for easels, supplies, and tools, and shelves for pre-fired ceramics.
Storage Room – to become an office, currently includes windows.

PROPOSALS

The request is for pro bono design work. Proposals should include design concept, brief resumes of participants including past relevant experience, and budget for materials and construction. Proposals from design teams with artist involvement are encouraged. Budget for the entire project should not exceed $25,000. Because the facility is an historic landmark, the exterior and exposed sides will not be considered for renovation. Applicants will have access to the building to inform their design concepts. Floor plans are available in PDF format at the bottom of this page.

PROJECT TIMELINE

Project proposals will be accepted until October 30, 2008. A review committee will consider proposals. Designers of accepted proposals will receive recognition in KAC’s marketing materials, and be featured at the design reveal ceremony on December 4, 2008. Renovations are due to be completed by Fall 2009.

ABOUT THE PETER KIRK BUILDING

Completed in 1891, the Peter Kirk Building, a quintessentially Victorian construction, was designed in the Romanesque Revival style, which borrowed elements from European architecture of the eleventh and twelfth century such as semi-circular arches, turrets, recessed doors and windows, and heavy materials like rusticated stone and brick. The building has been named an historic landmark.
