GALLERY INTERN: CELIA CHUNG

Celia Chung first got involved with KAC by volunteering for Summerfest in 2005. Her experience that summer
proved not enough for her, as she continued to volunteer for the KAC Gallery. A talented artist herself,
Celia learned the basics of layout and design while getting familiar with Photoshop and InDesign.
Her web skills proved to be an incredibly valuable asset not just to the Gallery, but to the
Kirkland Arts Center as a whole. Since Summerfest, Celia has volunteered her time every Friday to
assist in greeting gallery visitors, answering phones, registering students, exhibition preparation,
graphic design and keeping the KAC website up-to-date.
May 9th will be Celia's last day volunteering at KAC, as she is graduating from High School and getting
ready to study illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design. She will be dearly missed both for her
outstanding abilities and her great sense of humor, and we wish her the best in her future pursuits!
Celia Chung is a great example of how volunteering at KAC benefits both the organization and the individual!

SPONSOR: ST. JAMES ESPRESSO

St. James Espresso is a new coffee shop and café in downtown Kirkland, conveniently located across the street from
the Kirkland Performance Center. St. James Espresso is the vision of Jeanette Van Belle. Having survived numerous
mergers working in the telecom business, she dreamed of launching her own business. She envisioned either opening a
restaurant or a coffee shop. She has combined her two interests into St. James Espresso which opened in November 2007.
The café has a comfortable, inviting atmosphere. "The company's mission is to make a positive contribution to our
local community, and helping customers make connections is what we are all about" said Jeanette. The café offers
free wi-fi. It is outfitted with three televisions, books, magazines, newspapers, and board games; catering to a
varied clientel from business people to families. All of this is intended to create a welcoming environment that
offers a respite from our hectic lives and helps create a sense of connectedness to others and to possibly spur
academic thought. Jeanette has found it particularly inspiring that children are often seen at her two kids tables
dressed up in their finest with their china tea sets.
The coffee shop serves coffee from Caffee D'Arte, and an ambitious menu of fresh items that change weekly.
There are always 5 panini sandwiches, 2 soups, several salads, fresh fruit, baked goods and imported desserts
on the menu. These are chosen from a selection of hundreds of rotating choices. The delicious baked goods
are organic and all natural products.
The next business venture for St. James is the concession stand at Houghton Beach on Lake Washington Boulevard.
We can all look forward to the opening this spring, in time for the summer season.
Each month St. James contributes and connects to the community by spotlighting a local non-profit in the café,
publicizing their good works inside the coffee shop and donating a portion of all proceeds received that month
to the organization. In April, they highlighted Kirkland Arts Center for their dedication to promoting
exemplary visual arts programming through their arts education classes, Gallery exhibitions and free
outreach programs for the public. Jeanette says that she would like to see other Kirkland
establishments follow their example.
